National Athletic Training Month

Athletic Training is an important part of Dr. Jack Hughston’s legacy, and so we’re proud to recognize the important work the Hughston athletic trainers do for the community!

Let’s hear from some of the Hughston athletic trainers.

2026 is my 26th year of being a certified athletic trainer, so maybe I’m doing something right. 😊 After all these years, I continue to work with Friendship Christian School. I believe I have had a positive impact on people at FCS and Wilson County. I figured out early on in my career how much of an impact an athletic trainer can have with the middle school and high school age group. In this profession, you see athletes at some of the worst moments in their lives. When the injury happens, you (the athletic trainer) are there from initial injury onset until that athlete returns to play. For my patients and athletes, I am there to listen, to educate, and help them through treatments, rehab, and the healing process. Then you get to be there with them when they return to participating in their sport or activity. It is a full circle moment for you and them. – Nathan, Director of Athletic Training at Hughston Clinic

“I love being an athletic trainer, specifically in the clinical setting. I enjoy being able to see our patients get better. From seeing them before surgery when they are in pain, and being able to be a small part of their recovery. It is very rewarding seeing our patients progress to being pain-free and able to return to their regular activities.” – Taylor

“Every day is different, which keeps the job exciting. Many people are surprised by how diverse the athletic training profession is. Athletic trainers provide emergency care, injury evaluation, rehabilitation, and patient education in many different settings.” – Whitney

“My favorite part of being an Athletic Trainer at Hughston is being able to help and treat populations of all age groups, but still being able to have PRN opportunities to go out and support schools on the sidelines. I love the school athletic environment.” – Cassie

“My favorite thing about being an Athletic Trainer is the wide range/variety of people you come in contact with. Being authentic, building trust, accurately diagnosing an injury and helping them return to their sport is the most rewarding part.” – Nick

“The Advice I would give to others looking to pursue athletic training is to have an open mind. the field of athletic training has grown so much since I’ve been in the profession that there are numerous opportunities to explore.” – Courtney
